What are additives?
Anything added to a base oil which improves the existing properties
or gives new performance properties is considered an additive, these improve the performance
and characteristics of the base oil.
When we talk about an additive package, we refer to a combination of additives used to enhance the base oil. The following are commonly used additives which can be combined to form an additive package:
Extreme Pressure Agent, Antiwear Agent, Detergent, Oxidation Inhibitor, Dispersant, Foam Inhibitor, Rust and Corrosion Inhibitor, Friction Modifier and Pour Point Depressant.
The formulation of the many different types of lubricating oils varies depending on their application, and because there is a wide variety of applications, there are many formulations available, and manufacturers usually offer guidlines as to the oil formulations that are suitable for their machinery.
